How to use the stock screener
A stock screener narrows the market down to the companies that match your criteria. Start with a preset or pick filters yourself: choose a sector, set a market cap range to focus on large, mid or small companies, and add limits for share price, beta (how volatile a stock is versus the market) or minimum dividend yield.
Performance filters use live quotes. You can look for stocks trading above both their 50-day and 200-day moving averages (a common sign of an uptrend), stocks within a few percent of their 52-week high, or today's biggest movers. Click any column header to sort, and select a ticker to open its full analysis page.
Screening is a starting point, not a verdict. Once you have a shortlist, compare the companies side by side, check the AI Insights score and read the financial statements before you make a decision.
Stock screener FAQ
Is the StockEngine screener really free?
Yes. Every filter, the CSV export and the watchlist are free with no account, trial or subscription. The site is supported by advertising and affiliate partnerships.
How is dividend yield calculated?
Dividend yield is the company's last annual dividend per share divided by its current share price. A stock paying $2 a year that trades at $50 yields 4%.
What does beta mean?
Beta measures how much a stock tends to move relative to the overall market. A beta of 1 moves in line with the market, below 1 is less volatile and above 1 is more volatile.
How current is the data?
Prices and daily changes update from our market data provider during the trading day and may be delayed. Company fundamentals update as new financial reports are filed.
Popular stock screens to try
Dividend stocks: large and mid caps with a dividend yield of roughly 2% to 6%. Very high yields can signal a dividend at risk, so check the payout ratio before buying. Run the dividend screen.
Value stocks: profitable companies with a low P/E ratio compared with their sector. Read growth vs. value investing for the trade-offs.
Blue chips: large caps with steady earnings and dividends. See what are blue-chip stocks.
Lower-volatility stocks: filter for a beta below 1 for holdings that have historically swung less than the market.
After you screen
A screener only shows which stocks pass some numerical tests. Before buying, open each company's stock page to review its financial statements, run it through AI Insights for strengths and risks, and put your finalists side by side in the compare tool. Our step-by-step guide on how to use a stock screener and the stock analysis checklist walk through the whole process.
